Strings Kokedama Handmade

Simple Beauty
I are usually used to growing plants in pots. Till I found an unique way to hang plants which is bound by strings - kokedama.

It's a simple method of letting plant grow without the conventional potting method. The method of growing is simple. There are many instructional videos available on YouTube and many step-by-step process is given on various blogs.

Here are the items required to make kokedama at home:

  • Red soil
  • Peat moss
  • Coco  peat
  • Spider plant or ferns (my two fav plants)
  • Jute rope
  • Scissors
  • Cotton cloth

If you think you require guidance, then you can attend kokedama class in Bangalore. These classes are conducted in Bangalore and Trivandrum.

Falling in Love with Fern

Fern Love

We had fern in our house as long as I can remember. Some survived many seasons, while some dilly-dallied before it perished from the pots.

Now, I have a resurgence of interest towards ferns. In my garden I have around 10 varieties of ferns - name of most ferns are still mystery to me. How can I not find the names of the ferns when I can easily search the image and find its name online?

Some ferns has close resemblance that I can't come to a clear conclusion. For instance, the fern in the above picture looks close to these two types - Dallas Fern, Tiger Fern.

As these picture of Dallas Fern and Tiger Fern has close similarity with the one at home, I am leaving it for more exploration and find.

Ferns Used in Terrarium

I have kept this fern in a terrarium and it's growing well. Though it can overcrowd the small glass container, it's easy to limit it by pruning the excess leaves.

Have you tried growing ferns in a terrarium? Which fern have you used?

Sempervivum Calcareum Succulent Hen and Chicks

Sempervivum at Garden Care, Ulsoor

One of my weekend trip is to the close by plant nurseries looking for fresh stock of plants, and look for a bargain deal. As a routine, I mostly visit two nurseries in Ulsoor area - Indo American and Garden Care.

In today's trip, I didn't find anything new at Indo American. Next I stopped at Garden Care and I couldn't but admire the healthy looking Sempervivum ( Hen and Chicks).

About Sempervivum

These are evergreen, perennial plants which has spike shaped leaves in rosettes design. In a matured plants you an see new baby plants around the mother plant.

The matured plant flowers and after which the mother plant dies, while the remaining chicks continue to grow following its cycle.

Watering and Care of Sempervivum

This is an excellent plant in an open terrarium. Avoid over watering as it can lead to lead to rot. One way to identify this plant is the way new sprout appears. It's also called "Hen and Chicks" as the mother plant produces multiple small plants around it Chicks.

During the initial days, I used to get plants from Bangalore and my collection used to be from Indo American nursery at Ulsoor. Thankfully, now there are many other nurseries in Trivandrum, like Casa Plante, from where I buy terrarium friendly plants.

Peek Inside the Terrarium

What's a Terrarium?
Terrarium (tuh-rair-ee-uhm) is a collection of plants ( tropical or arid) grown in a transparent glass container. Before you start making a terrarium, it's important to choose the right container ( not opaque) and choose the plants having similar growing conditions.

The clear glass container used in terrarium makes it easy for sunlight to reach the plants and good for viewing the green growth.

These days, open jar and closed container are called as terrarium. However, terrarium by definition is a closed bottle or jar. In my class I teach both, the open container and the closed one ( jar).

\In my short experience in making terrarium, I feel the closed one is easier to maintain and it can manage by itself my short absence.

These days, it has become popular for busy people who likes to have a green orb in their house or next to their work desk.
What are the common theme used in terrarium

1. Air Plant Terrarium

2. Dessert Terrarium

3. Tropical Themed Terrarium

4. Rain Forest Terrarium
