Peek Inside the Terrarium

Bowl of Green Vibe

What's a Terrarium?
Terrarium (tuh-rair-ee-uhm) is a collection of plants ( tropical or arid) grown in a transparent glass container. Before you start making a terrarium, it's important to choose the right container ( not opaque) and choose the plants having similar growing conditions.

The clear glass container used in terrarium makes it easy for sunlight to reach the plants and good for viewing the green growth.

These days, open jar and closed container are called as terrarium. However, terrarium by definition is a closed bottle or jar. In my class I teach both, the open container and the closed one ( jar).

\In my short experience in making terrarium, I feel the closed one is easier to maintain and it can manage by itself my short absence.

These days, it has become popular for busy people who likes to have a green orb in their house or next to their work desk.
What are the common theme used in terrarium

1. Air Plant Terrarium

2. Dessert Terrarium

3. Tropical Themed Terrarium

4. Rain Forest Terrarium

Alocasia Kokedama

Kokedama
Every plant in your house has a story. It could be the story about how it reached your home ( gift or purchase), why you got it in the first place, etc.

Just like that, I got this Alocasia plant from an uncle who stays at Kunnukuzhy. When I got the plant home, I delayed planting it. Then after a gap of two days, I  made it, I forgot it for a month as my mom was watering it. Later I found that it was over watered and all the leaves has perished with it.

Then after few days, there was hope in the form of a bud which came out of the knotted ball. Wow!

There's life, not all is lost. From the depths, life has come forth to show to the world. So, happy to see when turnaround happens in life.

Rocks Ferns and Pebbles - Terrarium Designs

How different is your terrarium - one made earlier and the one you are going to make now? Do you fall into the trap of making the same design or layout?

I have a problem with the terrain - not a problem, but it's more a monotony of design. I tend to follow the same regular design - keeping the tall plant behind and the small one placed at the lower end of the glass bowl.

Terrarium Image Library
This is one which I have been thinking for sometime. I would like to create a repository of sample terrarium as it would trigger my imagination to make something new.

Have you thought of downloading terrarium images and then using it as reference for your future project.

Kokedama A New Hobby

Making of a Kokedama

Spider Kokedama

Kokedama is new for me, but there are many who have successfully made this in Kerala. It's a simple and a altogether a different way of keeping the plant. All these years, I wonder why I haven't such an idea crossed my mind. Was it Out-of-Pot kind of idea!

Kokedama has its origin in Japan. It's a variant of bonsai, but entirely a different way of keeping plant. At the first sight, you might wonder how on earth to make one of these. But, once you know the things and steps, it's just anyone's game.

Handy Things for Making Terrarium

Terrarium Tools
Making a terrarium at home is as simple as any other gardening activity. While making a terrarium, one task is to reach far corner and interiors of the glass container. Right tool such a long handle brush or forceps and scissors will make things easier to manure and reach the right place without wriggling your hand in the small jar opening.

Few essential tools required for terrarium are:

1. Long handled scissors
2. Long tweezers
3. Brush
4. Soil stamper ( Make one using wine cork and cake dowel)
5. Long handle spoons
6. Squeeze bottle for watering the plants

Learn Water Cycle Terrarium for School Kids

Adding Soil to the Terrarium

Finishing Brush Touches
'

Learning Lesson for School Kids
Terrariums as an ecosystem-- a miniature garden in a bottle which mimic the real water cycle. For school kids a terrarium making project would be a practical understanding of life cycle of plants, and a great way of bring them close with the nature.

Also, they could learn how the water evaporates, then condenses and drips down to the soil..

Start by teaching them the plants that will adjust to the high-humidity inside a glass container. After the basics are covered, they can be taught the difference between low-light plants and cactus or succulents.

At home, or at school, they can start with discarded plastic bottles where they can see how plants can be grown.
